On the seventh day of the record heat wave that gripped New York City, banks in the midtown section were shut down briefly Monday afternoon when an electrical fault shut down two substations that provide power to the east side of Manhattan, between 44th and 52nd Street. Although Manufacturers Hanover Trust and Chemical Bank were the only major U.S. money center banks affected, a number of the major European banks were also blacked out.
