Dutch artist MC Escher delighted in confusing and confounding his audience. A quick glance at one of his paintings shows an entirely normal building with bemused figures walking its corridors. Let your eyes linger for just a little longer, and the building is soon revealed as an impossible structure – pillars prop up thin air, corridors merge floors together at odd angles, and staircases lead to nowhere.
