Swiss Bank, Credit Suisse Post Sharp Gains Foreign Exchange, Derivatives Trading Cited

The once-perfect credit ratings of Swiss Bank Corp. (SBC) and Credit Suisse may be under a cloud but that didn't stop either bank from turning in top-flight performances in foreign exchange trading last year. Both banks attributed much of their growth in forex income to trading in derivative instruments.

At the parent bank level, Basel-based Swiss Bank Corp. saw foreign exchange and precious metals trading income soar 35 percent, from SFr 519 million in 1990 to SFr 702 million in 1991. Fully 90
