Estonia Plans Early Adoption Of Euro

Estonia has formed a working group to consider the adoption of the euro as the national currency despite official EU warnings against potential candidates for membership not to act in haste.

Estonia is negotiating EU membership terms and has said it hopes to join in January 2003. However, according to the Estonian prime minister’s office, on January 24 the working group would be pushing for adoption of the euro by 2002. A few days earlier the prime minister
