Declining liquidity in the foreign exchange market, despite continued growth in turnover volume, is largely due to consolidation among the major banks, said Terry Smeeton, head of foreign exchange for the Bank of England at the Dow Jones Telerate Foreign Exchange conference in London last week. The conference theme, "Surviving the Revolution," focused primarily on the seemingly contradictory phenomenon of falling liquidity amidst higher volume.
