Jamaica ‘mints’ first units of digital currency
Central bank kicks off pilot exercise with limited issuance of currency to banks and payments firms
The Bank of Jamaica became the latest central bank to launch a live trial of central bank digital currency (CBDC), as it “minted” the first units of its CBDC on August 9.
“At a short ceremony this morning, Bank of Jamaica minted Jamaica’s first batch of central bank digital currency,” the central bank said in a statement.
Under the “watchful eyes” of finance minister Nigel Clarke, the central bank demonstrated the “intricate but efficient process” of issuing the digital currency.
