IMF weighs up $650 billion SDR issuance

Figure would allow Biden administration to avoid a vote in Congress

The International Monetary Fund is considering an allocation of special drawing rights worth $650 billion, a figure that appears designed to smooth the way for the US to back the measure.

Kristalina Georgieva, IMF managing director, said on March 23 the fund’s executive board had held an “informal discussion” on the SDR issuance. The proposed issuance is backed in principle by the G20, but the final figure has yet to be agreed.
