UK euro speculation gathers pace

UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown has previously pledged to deliver his long-awaited assessment of the economic case for euro adoption by early June, although reports suggest it could come earlier than that. Analysts believe Brown is unlikely to say that the UK economy is ready to join the euro.

However, other reports suggest that Prime Minister Tony Blair -- buoyed by an increasing popularity rating following the war -- could push for a quick referendum to capitalise on his popularity
