Lam started working for Prebon -- then named Charles Fulton (Hong Kong) -- in February 1975 as a trainee forex dealer. He later assumed the roles of spot market manager and director before becoming managing director of Prebon’s Hong Kong operation in December 1993.

In 1999, Lam took on the newly-created position of managing director for Prebon’s foreign exchange and money markets business, while continuing to manage the brokerage’s Hong Kong operations. In this new role, Lam was responsible
