West Africa announces ambitious ‘eco’ currency plans

Single currency seems unlikely to be introduced by next year, despite updated launch plans

The Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) has adopted ‘eco’ as the name of its single currency, which it plans to begin issuing in 2020.

The 15 countries announced the new currency at their 55th ordinary session last month, despite concerns they will be unable to reach the ambitious launch goal.
