Over the past 12 months, Barclays’ Asia-Pacific (Apac) FX options business delivered one of its strongest performances in recent years, supported by sustained growth in structured options activity, consistent liquidity provision and disciplined risk management.

The business combined broad product coverage and execution certainty with the ability to warehouse and actively manage risk, helping corporates and institutions navigate complex cross-border flows and heightened market volatility.

A key driver of this evolution has been the continued enhancement of BARX, Barclays’ electronic FX trading platform. Rebuilt on a modern technology stack, BARX has broadened the range of client activity it supports and strengthened the scalability of its electronic offering.

By automating key workflows, the enhanced BARX has delivered more consistent pricing and faster execution, while helping Barclays scale the delivery of tailored solutions without compromising flexibility.

“Clients want confidence that they are working with a partner who deeply understands their risks and can execute consistently to the highest standards,” says Tim Albers, head of FX strategy and structuring for Apac at Barclays. “By pairing our structuring expertise with the right technology, we have simplified our workflows, enabling us to deliver bespoke solutions reliably and at scale.”

The strength of Barclays’ markets and investment banking franchises stems from the close collaboration across teams, enabling the delivery of tailored solutions that helped clients navigate complex market conditions, manage risk and improve execution outcomes.

These solutions are built around real economic exposures, including trade flows, funding profiles and overseas investments, while taking into account cashflow certainty and broader risk management objectives.

Automation also played an increasingly important role, enabling clients to run large hedging programmes more efficiently and at greater scale while reducing operational burden.

The strength of Barclays’ execution and market-making franchise was also particularly evident during periods of heightened market volatility. The business provided consistent liquidity across core Asian FX options products, warehoused risk where appropriate and actively managed exposures across a diversified client base.

Underpinning this performance was a disciplined risk management framework, with dynamic hedging and targeted mitigation techniques helping to manage exposures while preserving client service and protecting firm capital.

“Providing liquidity across a broad range of market conditions requires both a strong risk appetite and disciplined risk management,” says Alexandre Briantais, head of FX options trading Apac at Barclays. “That balance has enabled us to deliver dependable pricing and execution for clients, even during periods of heightened volatility.”

Technology investment and close collaboration across trading, structuring and technology teams helped the business scale efficiently and improve execution across increasingly complex client activity.

Together, these enhancements have reinforced Barclays’ position as a full‑service FX options franchise capable of delivering consistent outcomes at scale.

Looking ahead, the focus remains on deepening product coverage and platform capabilities to meet evolving client demand for customised solutions and reliable electronic fulfilment.

Continued investment in platform functionality, execution automation and risk controls is planned to support higher volumes while preserving the flexibility required for bespoke structuring.

“Clients are increasingly looking for partners that can combine innovation, risk expertise and seamless execution,” says Yun Zhang, head of macro trading Apac at Barclays. “Our continued investment in technology, structuring and trading has strengthened our ability to deliver differentiated solutions at scale while maintaining an unwavering focus on client outcomes. This recognition reflects the strength of our franchise, the trust of our clients and the dedication of our colleagues across Apac.”
